music: the doorway

she seemed to always around. her and my mother would hold beautiful conversations at our baby grand piano. she would tell my father exciting stories in the car as he took me to hockey practice. i was too young and too shy to attempt meeting her myself, but i knew i wanted more.

as i reflect back on my upbringing, i realize that i received a musician’s ear from my mother and an engineer’s ear from my father. the chord progressions my mother would play at the piano seemed to speak to me, in a way i’d never heard anywhere else. it was pure magic. while on the way to hockey practice, my father would allow me to experience the delicious guitar sounds of eddie van halen, angus young, and tom scholz. he was always so curious how each of their bands “got that sound,” and would call attention to little drum or bass motifs that he enjoyed. almost immediately, i began picturing these mysterious bands recording their songs. i imagined what each person must’ve been doing while they created such cohesive sound.

my mother showed me how to hear music, and my father showed me how to hear sound.

after graduating from novi high school in 2011, i moved to houghton, michigan to attend michigan technological university and pursue a bachelor’s degree in sound design. i always loved music growing up, and was constantly toying with my dad’s stereos and dubbing my own cassette tapes. i didn’t just like listening to music, i liked the sound of the music; the way each instrument seemed to melt together to create something larger than itself. i
